Dentures are further catagorised into

• Full Denures – this type of denture covers most of the palate or lower gum when all the teeth are missing on that arch
• Partial Dentures – this type of denture replaces one or more teeth in the arch, but there are still teeth present.
• Sectional Dentures – this type of denture can be used for one side of an arch therefore preventing acrylic crossing the palate

Dentures are customised to each individual’s needs and therefore require impression, or at GVDC we use an intra-oral scanner.

Acrylic Dentures

This is the standard denture material that is used in most dentures, the gum work is made up of pink acrylic and the teeth are made up of various shades of tooth coloured acrylic. These dentures are great for filling spaces left over by missing teeth. This type of denture is easy to add to later on if another tooth is lost. Acrylic dentures can be improved with additions of clasps which may help overall stability and retention. Denbtures can also be fatened onto implants to make them very stable.

Cobalt Chrome Dentures

Chrome Dentures tend to cover less of the mouth because they utilise a thin frame of metal that results in less coverage of the palate and gums in general. Acrylic is bonded onto a metal framework so the teeth look very aesthetic, while providing strength and less coverage and bulk in your mouth. Chrome dentures have clasps incorporated into the metal framework to make the denture more retentive during eating and talking.

Flexi Dentures

This is a newer type of material where teeth are attached to a slightly flexible gum coloured denture base. The base can ‘hug’ adjacent teeth which makes them act as natural clasps. They provide a metal free alternative to the traditional dentures and are very retentive.
